Meet the Midwives

"We have a secret in our culture, and it's not that birth is painful.
It's that women are strong."

Laura Stavoe Harm

Heritage midwives truly enjoy the process of attending women during their pregnancy and labor. This the most important time of your baby's life and we want to protect that. We are thrilled to be able work out of our free-standing birth centers in Anchorage, Palmer and Soldotna. Please feel free to stop by and visit with us.

Before starting as a midwife, I worked both as a doula (www.dona.org) and as a Bradley Natural Childbirth Educator (www.bradleybirth.com). I have also been trained as an Aquanatal and Happiest Baby instructor.

For over 15 years I’ve attended women in both the home and birth center settings. I am licensed by the State of AK and carry certifications in Neonatal Resuscitation, CPR and IV. All licensed midwives are required to have a certain amount of CEUs per licensing period. My husband and I have enjoyed 4 home water births.

My goal is to help women birth in whatever way they wish, with the least amount of intervention possible. I believe women should birth surrounded by people who love them and in an environment and atmosphere that the woman chooses. This allows the woman to fully relax and let the birth unfold as it needs to.

Working in the midwifery field since 2009, I have been honored to be a part of such a special moment in a family's life. Creating a space that is peaceful and respectful during pregnancy and birth is so important and I work hard to ensure that each client and their family feels supported.

Like all Direct-Entry Midwives I am licensed by the State of Alaska and certified in Neonatal Resuscitation, CPR, and IV. I love being a part of a community focused on informed choices and letting a mom set the direction and pace for her own pregnancy and birth. Seeing so many repeat clients coming through the door is one of my favorite parts of midwifery – we get to be a part of this family's life for years. I also have an understanding husband and daughter who make this exciting life even better.

I was first introduced to midwifery at 14 by ‘Spiritual Midwifery'. After a hospital birth with my first child I decided to use midwifery care for my 2nd baby and never looked back. However, it was not until I had 7 children that I finally begin midwifery school.

I've practiced all over the world and have since welcomed my 8th baby. I've enjoyed practicing both in Alaska as well as in Haiti and the Philippines. I love being able to cater to women's individual needs during their pregnancy and birth while caring for them with the respect they deserve.

I have spent the past several years working with women and newborns while working as a nurse in Labor and Delivery, Pediatrics and in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Now as a Certified Nurse Midwife i practice with a core understanding that pregnancy and birth are conditions of health and wellness. I am excited to use my experience and make a difference by help educate women on their birth options and providing safe, accessible and evidence based care for women.

I am thrilled to be part of the Heritage Birth Center team where I am able to practice midwifery with other women who recognize the beauty and perfection that is a woman's body as she is growing a baby. I am able to partner with women to help them have the birth experience they most desire. Additionally, with my medical background I am able to blend holistic health care with western medicine to provide a wide range of options for women's health care issues across her life span, from puberty, to pregnancy and birth, to contraception to menopausal issues – I am so blessed to get to collaborate with with women to help them achieve the healthiest versions of themselves.
